Private Joseph Scully (Service No:3448) enlisted in the AIF on 28 December 1916 and was attached to 45th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Anchises A68 on 24 January 1917. Private Scully was in France for one week before being returned to Australia as unfit. He embarked for the RTA on 26 September 1917 on board HT Borda and was Discharged on 25 December 1917.

Born in 1869 in Croydon in London, Joseph was the son of Mathew Scully (a Silk Printer) and Lydia Johnson. Joseph was a Baker in London, England in 1895 when he married Rhoda Nash (b1876 in London) and in 1895 served with the AS Corps 77th Middlesex Regiment (Regimental No:T/12192). In 1912 Joseph and eldest son Edward immigrated, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Moravian - Joseph stated his occupation as Farm Labourer. Rhoda and their two younger children followed in 1913.

The family settled in Geelong, Victoria - although Joseph was in Wagga Wagga NSW when he enlisted in the AIf in 1916. Joseph and Rhoda settled in Geelong, Victoria where Joseph was a Sawmill Worker and Labourer. Joseph died in 1930 and Rhoda in 1954.
