Military Cross
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a company in an attack. Although the attacking platoon suffered severely on forming up, the position was taken without a hitch, and a counter attack dispersed.'

FROM TROOPER TO CAPTAIN
When war broke out Captain Pinney was Chief Government Surveyor at Port Moresby. He obtained leave of absence, returned to Victoria, and enlisted as a trooper with the 4th Light Horse Machlne Gun Squadron of the First Division, Australian Imperial Force. He fought in Gallipoli, and was wounded at Lonesome Pine.
While recovering from his wounds he was promoted 2nd-Lieutenant.
Later he took part in the evacuation. He was made First Lieuteuant, and transferred to the 6th Battalion. Word has just been received from France that he has been promoted captain. Captain Pinney is the son of Mrs Pinney and the late Mr H E Pinney, of "Merrimu," Hudson street, Moonee Ponds and is the nephew of Mrs G. Grave, 25 Duke street, St. Kilda.
