During WW1, LCpl Archibald William Bird (shared by Lucille Macreadie) was gassed in the trenches and repatriated to England for treatment, where he met the love of his life and future wife Lavinia Tutte. She loved him so much, that she came out to marry him. The family disinherited her for her choice. Archie met her at the boat in Melbourne, and they came to Tas. and married straight away. What a culture change for Lavinia. She came from luxury in England, to no electricity and washing her own clothes in the old copper and cooked her own food. She had no-one to help her and raised her family by herself. But she was a pillar of strength at Pipers Brook, raising money to build the hall, playing the piano at dances and found other means to fundraise. Lovely story by their granddaughter Lucille, thank you.
