George was born in Tasmania in 1890, son of James Johnston and Charlotte Williams.
Private Johnston enlisted in Townsville on 23 Sep 1916 aged 26, and embarked from Melbourne per RMS “Osterley” on 14 Feb 1917. He served on the Western Front with 4th Machine Gun Battalion. He returned to Australia on 19 Feb 1919. He was a boilermaker. He died on 22 Nov 1961.
