James Sibly enlisted in Melbourne on 02 August 1915 aged 41 years nad 4 months and was unmarried at the time. He had a fresh complexion with blue eyes and light brown hair, stood 5' 31/2" (161cm) tall and weighed 140lbs (63kg. Two of his brothers (Oswald Harrold and William Libby) also served.
James embarked on 11 October 1915 with the 11th/8th Battalion Reinforcements via Egypt and arrived in France on 30 March 1916. On 21 may 1916 he received gunshot wounds to his neck and schrapnel wounds to both arms. Invalided home on 8th December 1916 beacuse of shell shock and defective eyesight, James was discharged on 8 March 1917.
5 Days later he married Ethel May McRae, who had two children by a previos husband. James died in Melbourne on 24 August 1950, aged 78 years.
