Biography

Robert (Bob) was awarded the MSM after 21 Aug 1916, then from 04 Apr 1917 he acted as RQMS.

He took a keen interest in his work and his efforts lifted the efficiency of all the battalion cooks, and even more importantly, he instilled pride and pleasure into their work.

Both in and out of the line the Battalion has been well supplied with ample amounts of cooked food, which helped to keep the troops healthy and contented. This was in a large part due to the keen resourcefulness and hard work of Sergeant Charles.

"Part of the units success during the latter part of 1916 can be attributed to RQMS William James, who has since the Fromelles Battle efficiently and diligently acted as QM of the Battalion, with the willing support of Bob Charles, the Sergeant Cook, who temporarily assumed the appointment of acting RQMS" - Black and Gold The history of the 29th Battalion, 1915-18 by Ron Austin Page 58.
