Davies served on Gallipoli from 15th May 1915 with the 6th LHR till evacuated sick late October 1915. He transferred to Army Ordnance soon after and later in France transferred to Royal Flying Corps training in late 1916. He was discharged from the AIF during March 1916 and given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the RFC but he resigned his commission in July 1917 and rejoined the AIF in London on 30 July 1917. He was soon made 2nd Lieutenant in the 6 MG Company then Lieutenant 6 MG Company on 1 January 1918. He was wounded in action during August 1918, shrapnel wounds to the face and chest, and evacuated to England. Davies returned to Australia 17 March 1919.

On his return to Australia, William set up a real estate agency with his brother Thomas at The Rock.  After marrying Vera Jean Hore, he moved to Wagga in the early 1920s and became a distributor for the firm Dalgety & Co. (1925) before joining the firm Hore & Davies, where he remained until his retirement in about 1956.

Vera and William had five children – Thomas, Robert, Jean, Helen and Elizabeth.

William was a foundation member of Wagga Legacy, a member of the committee for the Far West Health Scheme, an elder at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, member of the council of the Tulloch Memorial Hostel, committee member of the Riverine Club and secretary of the Graziers’ Association. 

He died at Calvary Hospital in December 1956 at the age of 71.
