Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

William ‘Scotty’ McNee was born in Buttock, Polmont, Stirling, Scotland on 3.7.1878 to William and Margaret McNee. In 1899 William married Agnes Nancy Waters and they had 5 children. Agnes died in 1906, and William married her sister Mary, with whom he had 4 children. The family was living at 162 South St, Fremantle when he enlisted on the 13.12.15 at Perth, aged 37 years 4 months. He was a labourer, Presbyterian and a Private with service number 4861. He is described as being 5 feet 3½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 36½ -39 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He embarked at Fremantle on the Ulysses A 38 and disembarked in England on the 26.4.16.

William was wounded in action in France on the 14.8.16 and on the 19.8.16 he was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right arm. He was sent to the 70th Battalion on the 13.3.17, then back to the 48th on 21.4.17. He proceeded to France on 27.5.17.

Whilst serving with the 48th Battalion near Dernancourt, in the Somme, William worked as a stretcher bearer. He was part of a team evacuating casualties when a German shell exploded next to them. He was killed in action aged 39 at Henencourt Woods near Albert (map reference 57D.V.26.B.1.5), France on 27.3.1918. After the war, he was reburied at Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme in plot III.J.4. Personal effects returned to Mary included his disc, writing pad cover, Razor Strop, Religious book, pipe, wallet, notebook, photos and cards. Mary remarried, to MW Longbottom.
