Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Samuel St. Quinten and Maria BYRNES, Cooktown, Queensland

On Saturday news was received of the death, killed in action, of Private Arthur Herbert Byrnes. He was the eldest son of Samuel and Mrs Byrnes, old residents of Cooktown, North Queensland. He made the great sacrifice on the Western front on the 26th of last month. The deceased soldier enlisted about two years ago from Cooktown, and joined the 3rd  Machine Gun Coy. of the A.I.F., leaving England for the Western front on the 1st June last year. He was well-known in Port Moresby, being here about two years, working with his  father, Mr Samuel Byrnes, who is at present, with Messrs Burns, Philp & Co., Ltd., Port Moresby. He was always a pleasant man to meet and was very popular. Deceased was a  descendant of the oldest family in New South Wales, his great grandmother being the first white girl born in Australia, viz., Miss Small, afterwards Mrs Oakes, which event took  place at Government House, Parramatta, New South Wales. Deceased was born on the 29th March, 1883, at Olive Vale Station, outside Cooktown. Flags were flying on the business premises on Saturday last as a mark of respect to the deceased soldier.
