Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A  Digger of The Great War resting peacefully but not marked at Sandgate Cemetery.

66 years ago today, on the 19th January 1955, Private George James A Matthews, 30th Battalion (Reg No-4075), labourer from Little George Street, North Waratah, New South Wales and 157 Australia Street, Camperdown, N.S.W. and 53 Grieb Street, Mayfield, N.S.W. and 386 Crown Street, Surry Hills, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. ANGLICAN 1-21. 73.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 25th April 1894 to John and Louisa (Louise) Matthews of Margaret Street, (Mayfield) North Waratah, New South Wales, George enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 5.3.1918 (traumatic epididymitis, severe), George returned home April 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 18th May 1919.

I have not located Mr Matthews’s name inscribed on any known WW1 War Memorial or Roll of Honour. Name possibly inscribed on the WW2 Stewarts & Lloyds (Australia) Pty., Limited. Honor Roll (photo, unveiled date unknown).

I located George resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger, so March 2020 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Older sister Louisa Ellen (born 1882, died 1888) also sleeping here.

George's father John, died 1906, also resting here.

Older brother John (30th Battalion, Reg No-796, born 1890, died 1982?) also served 1st A.I.F.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque (also served 2nd A.I.F., Service No-N271562, 31st Garrison Battalion) to restore honour and dignity to George.

Lest We Forget.
