The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 61st name inscribed is Private Arthur Douglas Allan.

On the 14th September 1958, Private Arthur Douglas Allan, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-3060), market gardener from Black Hill, Minmi, New South Wales and Thornton, N.S.W., died age 62 years 6 months, and his ashes have been interred at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown. Location of Ashes - Drive Wall Ax/137.

ALLAN, Arthur Douglas, Funeral notice, 15 SEP 1958, late of Thornton, formerly of Black Hill and Pelican, Newcastle Herald, 15 SEP 1958.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 7th March 1896 to William, died 21.1.1898, Black Hill, Minmi, N.S.W., age 33, father of 4, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Left Hand Side, Section 08, Plot 016, and Ida Edith Ellen Allan nee Taylor, died 3.6.1939, East Maitland, N.S.W., age 72, sleeping at Black Hill Uniting Cemetery, N.S.W., Plot 4, no funeral notice.

Arthur enlisted on the 22nd May 1916, age 20 years 2 months, at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.1.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 22.7.1917.

Arthur arrived home on the 25th September 1917, being discharged medically unfit (right inguinal hernia) on the 22nd October 1917.

Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.

Not officially commemorated.

I would like to see poppies placed at Arthur’s plaque in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
