Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

55 years ago today, on the 13th May 1969, Private James Foley, referred to as Jim, 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-1016), labourer from Limeburners Creek, New South Wales and Hamilton?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 79. CATHOLIC 3-96. 104.

I don’t believe Jim was ever married.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 8th October 1889 to Michael and Amelia Foley from Wyee, N.S.W., Jim enlisted on the 11th February 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A65 Clan Mcewen on the 28th June 1915.
Wounded in action - 9.11.1915 (bomb wounds both legs & left thumb, slight).

Admitted to hospital, Cairo 13.11.1915.

Commenced return to Australia 20.1.1916.

Jim arrived home invalided on the 21st February 1916, being discharged medically unfit (bomb wounds right knee & thigh) on the 22nd May 1916.

Reenlisted 13.11.1916, Rutherford, N.S.W., (No. N47069), discharged medically unfit 2.12.1916.

I have not located Mr. Foley’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Jim’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.

Mr. Foley’s gravesite has plaques erected by persons unknown, also an individual Memorial Plaque has been placed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall by persons unknown.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
