Alfred Butars Kerr (son of Mrs Cecilia Kerr, Auckland, New Zealand) was born on the 20th of October 1889 near Dunedin, New Zealand. As a natural born British subject and unmarried man, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Suevic with the 12th Light Horse Regiment on 13 June 1915 and would be fighting at Gallipoli by the end of August.

Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1918, after Alfred had moved on to artillery units.

Alfred returned to Australia in January 1920 and was finally discharged on the 7th May 1920

He died in Sydney in 1960 aged 70
