Life of Septimus Angus Brown

Septimus Angus Brown was the seventh child of Charles Alexander Brown and Ann Brown nee McInnes. He was born on 2 Oct 1894, at Cuthero Station via Wentworth, New South Wales. The family moved around chasing employment, some of their address was Kuline Station near Merbein, and Broken Hill both in New South Wales; Septimus’ father Charles Alexander ran a station called Lamplough Station, via The Anabrach, New South Wales. He named this after the township in north western Victoria where his father was born. It is here he worked as a labourer, storeman and a truck driver before enlisting into the 1st A.I.F.
Septimus enlisted at Wentworth, New South Wales on the 21 Feb 1916 age 21 years and 4 months. He was 5ft 4 inches (160 cm) tall with some distinguishing marks; two slight moles on his left cheek, one slight mole other side of right leg and two scars on his right deltoid. His eyes were brown to blue. He was a motor driver at the time of enlistment. Pte. Septimus Angus Brown, Number 5663 joined the 18th Rfts 6th Battalion on 1 Mar 1916. He embarked on the Aryshire, 3 Jul 1916. In November 1916, he transferred to the 59th battalion.
Septimus had many ailments whilst serving in France on the Western France. He suffered with mumps, trench feet and pleurisy. He was transferred from France to England in 1917 with pleurisy. After spending 9 ½ weeks in a military hospital he still complained of shortness of breath and pains in his side while breathing. Eventually he was medically discharged unfit for active duty In August 1917 where he received his final discharge papers on 27 Nov 1917, Melbourne, Victoria. Private Septimus Angus Brown’s Certificate of Charter on number 5663 Private Septimus Angus Brown of the 59th Battalion recorded his Conduct and Character whilst serving in the Australian Imperial Forces as Good.
After the war he married Elizabeth Jane Blake of Bairnsdale, Victoria on the 3rd Feb 1923 in Mildura, Victoria where he returned to Kulnine Station to work. This is where they raised their seven children before moving to Broken Hill In about 1937. It is here where he lived at Brown hill gaining employment in the Vacuum Oil Company.
They had several address in Broken Hill some being Blende Street, Chapple Street, Walfrom Street. In about 1948 the family moved to South Australian and he took up employment in in an aluminum and company manufacturing saucepans etc.
He eventually retired in Findon, South Australia. He passed away on the 20th December 1972 and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide, with his wife.
