Rail Ganger Killed By Goods Train
A RAIL ganger was killed instantly when his tricycle collided head-on with a goods train on a bend near Lyndoch today. He was Asa William Rice, 53, of Lyndoch. Rice was travelling from Sandy Creek to Lyndoch on his tricycle, about 10 a.m., and when rounding a curve about a mile out of Lyndoch was met head-on by the goods train. His tricycle was smashed to pieces, and he was hurled in the air. He was dead when the train crew reached him. Rice, who was a returned soldier from World War 1, leaves a wife and four children. Gawler police are preparing a report for the coroner.

MR. A. W. RICE KILLED.
We regret to record the death, by accident on Saturday last, at Lyndoch, of Mr. Asa William Rice, at the age of 53 years. He was travelling on his tricycle from Sandy Creek to Lyndoch about 10 a.m., and when rounding a curve about a mile from his home was met head on by a goods train. His tricycle was smashed to pieces and he was hurled in the air and killed instantly. The deceased was a former well-known resident of Gladstone, and before World War I was engaged as a blacksmith, and subsequently went overseas to fight in the European war. Upon his return he entered the railway permanent gang and resided at Gladstone again until his removal to Lyndoch as ganger. He was a member of the Gladstone R.S.L., and took a keen interest in football and cricket, and was highly esteemed. He has left a widow and four children — Albert, Joe, Bonnie and Bob, for whom much sympathy is felt.
