Son of Charles William Oakman and Mary Ann Oakman nee Sellers of Gembrook. Victoria. 

Brother of William Charles Oakman who returned to Australia on 8 June 1919 having served with the 23rd Battalion.

John had previously enlisted on 13 March 1916 but was discharged soon after as medically unfit due to defective vision and rheumatism.

During 1908c John married Mary Jane Bracken in Victoria

Commenced return to Australia on 19 October 1918 aboard HT Sardinia disembarking on 27 December 1918
