Samuel was stationed at the 2nd Base Depot, Mitcham in January 1916, then transferred to the 3rd Light Horse regiment, 19th reinforcement on 15 February. His unit embarked RMS Mongolia from Adelaide on 19 August bound for Egypt. He served with the 1st Machine Gun Squadron at Romani. Samuel was stationed at Rest Camp at Port Said on 1 August 1917, before rejoining the 1st Machine Gun Squadron at Marakeb on 11 August. He was sent to the School of Cooking at Ismailia from 17 September to 22 September.
Samuel returned to Australia on the Orari on 15 May 1919 and was discharged on 11 August. He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
In 1921 he was a member of the first team fielded by Kersbrook Football Club and played circa 1922 and was vice-captain in 1923. He died at Moorlands, South Australia, on 11 November 1955 aged 58.

Samuel Vivian James was born in Chain of Ponds, in the Adelaide Hills. Prior to enlisting, his occupation was a Gardener.
Samuel enlisted on 27 January 1916 to the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. He embarked on the RMS Mongolia on the 13 July 1916.
Samuel was in the school of cookery where he received training on how to become a field cook for helping others out in the field kitchens, supplying for men whilst he was also learning an important skill.
Samuel was given 3 medals for participating in the war, he received the British War Medal, the Star Medal, and the Victory medal.
Once the war was over Samuel returned to Australia on 15th of May 1919.
