Reuben was the second of twelve children of Donald McKaskill (b1871 in Brisbane, QLD) and Jane Ellen Leacy (b1876 in Brisbane, QLD). Donald (a Carpenter) and Jane married in 1895 in Bisbane, QLD. They lived in Brisbane, Dayboro and Woodford and in 1916 Donald enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:36). Donald and Jane were Divorced in 1927. 

Reuben was living in Woodford QLD in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:1720). He served in Egypt and France, where he was severley wounded in August 1916 - Shell Wound to his abdomen, leg and arm, resulting in part of his intestine being removed. Rebuen was Discharged in 1917 and was working as a Labourer in Woodford, QLD when he married Esther Norma Denford (b1911). By the mid 1930s they had separated - Esther was living in Brisbane and Reuben was in the Soldiers' Rest Home in Coolangatta, QLD.

In the early 1950s Reuben married Annie May Molloy (b1907 in Toowoomba QLD) - Annie had served as a Private (Service No:QX58061) in WWII. The couple settled in the Sandgate/Redcliffe area - Boondall and Deagon - where Annie died in 1960 and Reuben in 1962.
