Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

William was the youngest of five children of Andrew Haldane (b1858 in Fife, Scotland) and Isabella Dick (b1856 in Fife, Scotland). Andrew (a Labourer) and Isabella (a Factory Worker) married in 1879 in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. In 1887 the couple and their two children immigrated to Australia, arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the Duke of Buccleuch. The family moved to Charters Towers, QLD where Andrew was a Miner before relocating to Mulwarrie near Coolgardie, WA. Isabella died in 1909 and Andrew served in the AIF (Private; Service No:4617). In 1917 Andrew remarried.

William was a Shell Opener in Broome WA when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:1550). He served with 11th Infantry Battalion and was seriously WiA in July 1915 in Gallipoli - a GSW to the thorax. William was Discharged in August 1916.

Returning to Broome WA, William was working as a Labourer in 1921 when he married Charlotte Esther Hilliard (b1899 in Broome, WA). Following Charlotte's death in 1936, the children were fostered by Myra Dyson and William was a Prospector in Marble Bar. He enlisted in the ACMF in 1942 (Private; Service No:W7549) and was attached to 11 North West Battalion VDC when he was Discharged in December 1940.

William settled in Derby, WA where he worked as a Labourer. He died in 1961.
