Walter Krantzcke was the son of Charles Frederick and Elizabeth Ann Krantzcke, of Daceyville, New South Wales. He enlisted in June 1916 when he was still 15 years of age. He was 5 foot 5 inches and barely 50 kilograms in weight.
His older brother, 5707 Private Ernest Richard Krantzcke 13th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Stormy Trench, Gueudecourt, on 4 February 1917, aged 20.
Walter arrived in England in late 1916 and transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps during June 1917. He was never sent to the front, one assumes his youth was discovered, and in January 1918 he was returned to Australia, his file marked ‘underage’. He was only just 17 years old when he was returned to Australia.
Another brother, 6781 Private Robert King Krantzcke 7th Battalion AIF also enlisted at 18 years of age and served for three years before he returned to Australia in 1919.
