Son of Alfred and Elizabeth WILKES

'In operations near BROODSEINDE on 11th October, 1917, this man, a Company Scout, did splendid work carrying important messages and guiding various parties to the various posts under heavy shell fire, and on the night of 12th October, 1917, he succeeded in capturing a German and disarming him took him to Battalion Headquarters. His cheerful manner and gallant conduct set a splendid example to his comrades.'

Mr. and Mrs. A. Wilkes, of 21 Northwood street, Leederville, have received word that their fourth son, Private Herbert Wilkes (Bert), M.M., was killed in action on September 14. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes have two other sons at the front, Arthur and Leslie, and the deceased son left for the front after his two brothers just over two years ago. The late Private Bert Wilkes was employed at Messrs. Donovan and Overland, wholesale jewellers, prior to his enlistment. He was in his 23rd year.
