Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Corporal John Baird was the son of the late William Henry Baird and Annie Baird, of Crows Nest, New South Wales.

John’s younger brother, 1704 Pte. William Henry Baird 3rd Battalion AIF, was reported missing, then killed in action at Lone Pine, Gallipoli during August 1915, aged 20.

The brothers were raised in Armidale and Moree, New South Wales, and their father had passed away during 1910 so their mother was a widow.

John Baird served on Gallipoli from the week after his brother’s death, on 16 August 1915. He was evacuated with bronchitis to Malta on 25 September 1915. He served right through the Battle of Pozieres in France and was promoted to Corporal a week before he was killed in action at Flers on 12 November 1916.
