49 years ago today, on the 27th May 1975, Private Hugh McQueen Knight, 46th Battalion (Reg No-2929), carter from 72 King's Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, father of two (Jean Pamela & Hugh James), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. SALVATION ARMY-H. 11.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 24th July 1893 to George and Grace Knight; husband of Beatrice Maud Knight nee Ray (married 1915, Wickham, N.S.W., died 4.2.1976, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 84, sleeping here) of 30 Gordon Avenue, Hamilton, New South Wales and 139 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., Hugh enlisted on the 26th September 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Port Napier on the 17th November 1916.

Granted leave to England from 15.7.1918 to 3.8.1918.

Wounded in action - 25.8.1918 (gassed, slight).

Invalided to England 29.8.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 18.12.1918.

Hugh arrived home invalided on the 5th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit (gas poisoning) on the 20th March 1919.

Mr. Knight’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Hugh’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
