Military Medal
'At ARMENTIERES on the night 12th/13th April, 1917, on the occasion of a heavy bombardment of our lines and an attempted enemy raid on our trenches, one of the enemy shells burst in the bay occupied by his team of Lewis gunners, and wounded five of the six men. The sixth man - Private PITCHFORD - got his gun out from amongst the wounded men, took it to the parapet, and opened fire on the approaching raiders, remaining alone at his post until the attack had been repulsed.'
