Son of Joachim Vandenberg and Melenea Amelia Vandenberg of George Street, Singleton, NSW and of Granya, Victoria. Joachim served in the 4th Battalion enlisting on 21 January 1916 and returned on 27 October 1917.

Brother of Joseph William Vandenberg who returned to Australia on 20 October 1919 having served with the 56th Battalion and Alfred Ernest Vandenberg who returned to Australia on 20 May 1919 having served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade
