Died on this date – 14th November..... Sgt Ernest James Orr was born at North Melbourne, Victoria in 1894. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 15th August, 1914 as a 20 year old Baker from Coburg, Victoria.

Ernest James Orr was posted with 7th Battalion on 17th August, 1914 for recruit training & had the rank of Corporal. Corporal Orr was promoted to Lance Sergeant on 23rd September, 1914. He had previously served with Coburg Naval Brigade & Citizen Forces.

Lance Sergeant Ernest James Orr embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19th October, 1914 with the 7th Infantry Battalion “A” Company.

Lance Sergeant Ernest James Orr was wounded at Gallipoli Peninsula on 25th April, 1915. He was admitted to Deaconesses’ Hospital at Alexandria on 3rd May, 1915 with “bullet wound left temple, entrance left shoulder; exit lumbar region.” Reported as seriously wounded on 8th May, 1915. Lance Sergeant Orr was reported on 31st July, 1915 as “Still seriously ill but awaiting hospital ship for England. Fracture of Spine.”

Lance Sergeant Ernest James Orr was transferred to Sick Convoy to England on 2nd August, 1915 from Deaconesses’ Hospital & admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England on 15th August, 1915.

A Medical Report was completed on Sergeant E. Orr, 7th Battalion, on 9th October, 1915 at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England. His disability was recorded as G.S.W causing Paraplegia which had occurred while on Active Service on 25th April, 1915 at Gallipoli. The Officer in charge of the case recommended that Sergeant Orr be discharged as permanently unfit. The Medical Board also recommended on 13th October, 1915 that Sergeant Orr be discharged as permanently unfit.

Sergeant Ernest James Orr died on 14th November, 1915 at Brooklands Convalescent Home, Weybridge, England from wounds received in action at Gallipoli Peninsula – G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Spine. He was buried in Wandsworth (Earlsfield) Cemetery, London, England.
