Life Before the war
Ralph Potts was born in Bolton England on January 1897. He grew up with his mother Beatrice Matilda Potts, not much is known about his father or even if his father was present whilst he was growing up. He later moved away from Bolton and settled at Norwood, South Australia. Since his father was not present in his early life he very quickly had to grow up and get a job. He worked as a Salesman from a relatively young age to earn a living for his family.
Life in Service
Ralph enlisted at his hometown of Norwood on the 23 of September 1915 it is unknown where specifically he enlisted, but what is known is that he had done a trip by ship to Alexandria Egypt to what we assume to be a training camp as England was too cold for the training and then disembarked at Marseilles on the 23 of March 1916. On July the 17 1916 Ralph was promoted from gunner to bombardier and had remained at that role before being admitted to hospital for influenza on the second of September 1916 and remained for nearly three months before being discharged this was due to multiple factors i.e. poor hygiene in the trenches. He was later admitted to hospital again after a shrapnel wound to the left buttock.
