John Vincent Tierney was born on the 13th of August 1896 in Bowden, South Australia. His parents were, Catherine Tierney and John Tierney and his brother, Thomas D. Tierney. He enlisted to go to World War I on the 26th of April 1916 at the age of 19. He served the 32nd Batallion and his unit embarked from Adelaide on the 12th of August 1916 on a ship named HMAT A70 Ballarat. He was ill several times during the war but managed to avoid being wounded. He survived the war dying many years later at the age of 69 on the 8th of December 1965 in Grange, South Australia. John was a labourer before he enlisted. He later served in the 4th Garrison Battalion in World War II.
