John was the seventh of ten children of Patrick James Casey (born 1841 in Toomavara, Ireland) and Mary Ann James (born 1851 in Pembrokeshire, Wales). Patrick had worked as a Labourer before enlisting in 1842 as a Private (Regimental No:2179) with the 64th Regiment. Patrick served in India (Mutiny) for eleven years, and in Persia. He and Mary Ann married in 1864 in Wales and embarked in December 1866, accompanying the convict ship 'Corona' to Fremantle WA. In 1869 Patrick was appointed Assistant Warder at Fremantle Prison and in 1876 was assigned 20 acres at Lake Koojee. Following Patrick's death in 1880, Mary Ann remarried.
John started work as a apprentice horse trainer and in 1905 married widow Elizabeth Mary Brittan (nee Trott; born 1865 in Picton, WA). Elizabeth worked as a Launderess and John was a Miner in Collie, WA when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. He served as a Private (Service No:6489) with 11th Infantry Battalion in France. John was Discharged in November 1917 and returned to Collie, WA where he worked as a Horse Trainer, Miner and Truck Driver. John died in 1934 and Elizabeth in 1964.
