Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of David and Rosetta HODGKINSON; husband of V.B. HODGKINSON, 6 Manchester Road, Auburn, New South Wales.

Private B. Murray, on behalf of the oflicer commanding and drivers of the 53rd Battalion Transport, has written to Mrs. Hodgklnson: — It becomes my painful duty to offer you, on behalf of the drivers of the Transport officer-ln-charge and myself,  and to again stir your sad thoughts, our deepest and profound sympathy in the sad bereavement that has not long since fallen  on you and your -children; also extending our sympathy to your late husband's mother and father. We are one and all extremely  sorry to have to convey such sad news to you, as your late husband not only fell in action doing his duty nobly and, well, but he  was a man that carried a fine disposition, and was well liked and respected by us all. Therefore it remains our one and only duty  to send to you this 'letter of sympathy, But we sincerely hope and trust that God will watch over you and give your children the  strength to bear tho strain that has fallen upon them.
Your husband lies peacefully at rest in a pretty little churchyard behind our lines, with an imitation marble cross over his head  with the words: 'R.I.P. Sacred to the memory of Driver H. Hodgkinson, of the 53rd Battalion, of Auburn. Killed in action,  24/4/'18.' He lies side by side of British soldiers. Whilst we are staying here I will look after his grave, but I am afraid our stay here will not bo a long one. One thing I would liko to say, that your husband died with a smile on his face. I think Mr. Denny is  writing to you from this Battalion, so I will close. Trusting yourself and children are keeping well.
I remain, yours respectfully, Pte. B. Murray.
