Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Lawrence Gatenby was the only son of Robert Corney and Harriette Mary Gatenby. Known as ‘Corky’ Gatenby was a fine right-handed opening batsman, who played two matches for Tasmania in 1913-14. He made a remarkable record innings score of 300 not out during one day for South Launceston which brought him to the attention of selectors and gained a place in the State side.

He was one of the first Tasmanians to enlist during August 1914, and served on Gallipoli with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. On the 27 August 1915 he was invalided back to Australia with enteric fever.

He re-enlisted and embarked during July 1916 with the 40th Infantry Battalion and the rank of Sergeant.

He died 14th January 1917 at the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station Armentieres France from gunshot or shrapnel wounds to the right eye, neck, right side and right loin.
