James Brereton
James was born in Johnburgh South Australia in January 1891 to parents Thomas and Catherine Jane Brereton (nee Crack). At the age of 24 years and 2 months on the 3thd of March 1915 James enlisted in The Australian Imperial Force at Keswick in South Australia and was posted to The 10th Infantry Battalion.
James embarked from Adelaide for overseas service on HMAT Borda (Ship Number A30) on 23thd June 1915.
In September 1915 he contracted pneumonia and was hospitalised in Egypt and subsequently medically adjudged unfit with chronic bronchitis for operational service. As a result James was returned to Australia on the "Ship Beltana" for discharge, he was discharged on 21st of February 1916 and returned to farming.
On the 23thd April 1942 James enlisted in the Australian Army at Burra in South Australia and was posted to 10 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps where he served until he was discharged on 27 October 1945. On discharge James returned to Farming his property at Hanson in South Australia.
Following his death in 1971 James Brereton's remains were removed from the Salisbury Memorial Cemetery along with his wife Ivy's remains and scattered by his daughters Bette and Lorraine on the farm at Hanson on Remembrance Day 2020.
