Son of Cecil George A. Hawes and Louisa Hawes of Coledale, NSW. Brother of Hector H.H. Hawes, Albert W.E. Hawes, Mabel V.H. Hawes, Lillian A. Hawes and Thomas C. Hawes
Commenced return to Australia on 12 December 1918 aboard HT Nestor disembarking on 14 February 1919. When he arrived home he heard that he had mistakenly reported as being Killed in Action

During 1923c Cecil married Myrtle E.B. King in NSW
In the 1920's Cecil was contacted by Army Records reference to his dog tags being found on an exhumed soldier near Fromelles and could Cecil identify who the deceased soldier may have been. Cecil said that possibly it may have been that of 'Taffy' Johns who was also in the 4th Battalion and from Woroona, NSW. Cecil did not know his correct name.
