Heads up Tassie some news from Fallen Diggers - Great news, just received that our case for Private Elvin Hansell Raymond Hayes 1861 40th Bn has been successful. On the 12th February 1917 the 40th Battalion undertook a raid on the German trenches near Armentieres. Despite a previous bombardment on the trenches the wire in front of the German line remained uncut and the men of the 40th Battalion were unable to enter the German trench. The German responded with heavy fire which killed Lt Culton and Private Hayes. Lt Culton and Pt Hayes remains were taken by the Germans and buried. Lt Culton was identified, but sadly Pt Hayes was buried as an Unknown 40th Bn Soldier in Plot XI.D.25 at Pont Du Hem Military Cemetery.
