Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Leslie James Buckley was the son of Isabella and the late Joseph Buckley, of Manly, New South Wales.

His brother Alick Buckley was a well-known rugby player for Manly. Les was a linesman before the war and also represented the Manly 1st grade rugby team during 1910.

Les enlisted in April 1915, aged 23 years, and was joined the 3rd Battalion on 4 August 1915, only a few days before the Battle of Lone Pine. He was shot in the legs on 7 August 1915, and died at a field hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, only five days later.

His brother Alick also served at Gallipoli, and was awarded a Military Medal and a Mention in despatches for his service on the Western Front.

His Mum was granted a pension of 20 shillings per fortnight.
