Son of George Vafiopulous and Isabella Vafiopulous nee Bassett of McIvor Road, Jourantown, via Bendigo, Victoria.
Commenced return to Australia on 23 July 1919 aboard HT Canberra disembarking on 11 September 1919.

During 1919c John married Annie Elizabeth Cantrill. John and Annie were married on 18 August 1918 in the Wellington Church, Stoke-on-Trent, England. G.K. Lane, Curate officiated.
