79 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 25th June 1946, Private Charles John Davis, 30th Battalion (Reg No-1020), business manager (Messrs. J. Mackie and Company), from 46 Platt Street, Waratah, New South Wales, father of six (Douglas David, died 11.1.1927, Wallsend Hospital, N.S.W., age 3 years, 6 months, Laura, Ruth, Charles & Noel Michael, R.A.A.F., KIA 28.8.1943, age 21), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 64. CATHOLIC 1-G Spec. 87.

Born at Sandridge, Victoria about March? 1882 to Charles and Mary Ann Davis; husband of Ruth Kendrick Davis nee Mackie, married 1904, Sydney, N.S.W., died 30.4.1979, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 93, sleeping here, CATHOLIC 1-G Spec. 83, Charles enlisted on the 23rd July 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Disembarked Suez, Egypt 11.12.1915.

Admitted to hospital 29.6.1916 (pleurisy), 14.3.1919 (influenza).

Granted leave to France from 12.2.1918 to 28.2.1918.

Embarked for England 14.3.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 8.5.1919.

Charles arrived home on the 26th June 1919, being discharged on the 18th August 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Davis’s name has been inscribed on the Messrs. J. Mackie and Company Honour Roll, whereabouts unknown.

I have placed poppies at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
