James D Garelli's life

James Domenico GARELLI, was born 19th Oct 1887 in Warwick, Queensland to Italian immigrant parents John (Giovanni) GARELLA, Gardener from Piedmont, Italy and Biagia GARELLA nee GROSHER.

James enlisted 29th March 1916, was a single 28 year old Salesman. At the time of enlisting both parents were deceased, so next of kin was his sister Mary Purtle.

He embarked from Brisbane on board the HMAT A49 Seang Choon on 19th September 1916.
He service included Plymouth, France, Havre and Belgium. He served in the 47th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, and later the 48th Battalion.
He returned to Australia 16th March 1919 on the H.T. Czaritza on March 16, 1919 which terminated at Alexandria, Egypt. He transshipped on April 7, 1919 to the Dunluce Castle for the remainder of the voyage to Australia.
James was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

1st Jun 1922, James married Julia Macarthy in Brisbane, unfortunately Julia passed away 15th February 1933.
21st July 1937 James remarried to Dores Wolter in Brisbane and they went on to have two children.
James passed away 29th April 1970 at the Repatriation General Hospital, Greenslopes, Brisbane and was laid to rest at the Upper Mount Gravat Cemetery,(Roman Catholic) Brisbane. ANZAC Section
