Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Enlisted Rockhampton, Queensland,  26 January 1916, aged 18 yrs. 6 mths.

He was a stock rider and a second son of Robert Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Lewis of Burna Siding, Calliope, Queensland, Australia.

A field report dated 3-4 September 1916 states that Pte. Lewis was acting as a Company runner and was last seen alive but wounded by another runner in a shell hole in ‘No Man’s Land’ on 3-4 September in the vicinity of Mouquet Farm. Previously posted MIA he was formally posted KIA 29 December 1917. No remains were reported found after the battle for Mouquet Farm, presumably destroyed and buried by shell fire some time on 3 September, the last day of battle for the farm which the AIF captured and occupied.

On 9th August 1921 the War Graves Commission advised his mother they had been unable to trace any remains of Pte. Lewis. His name is now inscribed half way down panel 155 of the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneau under ‘52nd Battalion Australian Infantry’ and his name also appears on the Memorial Wall of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
