Private Philip Douglas Davis 12th Battalion Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Died of Double Lobar Pneumonia on the 2nd May 1917. Buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. He died in England but his body was sent to his cousin Sir Lionel Carty for burial. Born at Westbury, Tasmania. Son of Arthur Henry Douglas and Edith Ethel Davis, of Penguin, Tasmania.

Died on this date – 2nd May…… Philip Douglas Davis was born on 3rd July, 1897 at Sandy Bay, Tasmania.
According to information supplied for the Roll of Honour by his father, Philip Douglas Davis held the rank of Lieutenant in Tasmania’s Citizens Force.

Philip Douglas Davis enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 2nd August, 1916 as a 19 year old, single, Clerk from Westbury, Tasmania. He was posted to Claremont Camp & was transferred 22nd Reinforcements of 12th Battalion as Acting Sergeant on 16th October, 1916.

On 25th October, 1916 Acting Sergeant (Embarkation Roll has the rank as Private) Philip Douglas Davis, Service number 6864, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Ulysses (A38) & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 28th December, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was marched in to 3rd Training Battalion at Durrington, Wiltshire, England from Australia on 29th December, 1916. His rank reverted to that of Private on 29th December, 1916 but was then appointed as E.D.P. (Extra Duty Pay) Acting Corporal the same day.

Acting Corporal Philip Douglas Davis was sent to Parkhouse Hospital, Wiltshire from 3rd Training Battalion on 11th February, 1917 with Mumps. He was discharged to duty & was marched in to 3rd Training Battalion on 2nd March, 1917.

He was sent sick to Fargo Hospital, Wiltshire on 15th March, 1917. Private Davis was admitted with Scabies & his rank reverted to that of Private on 15th March, 1917. He was discharged to duty on 5th April, 1917 & marched in to 3rd Training Battalion the same day.
On 24th April, 1917 Private Davis was sent sick to Fargo Hospital on 24th April, 1917 with Influenza & was admitted seriously ill with Pneumonia on 26th April, 1917.

Private Philip Douglas Davis died at 4.55 am on 2nd May, 1917 at Military Hospital, Fargo, Wiltshire, England from Double Lobar Pneumonia.

His body was sent to his cousin Sir Lionel Carty for burial in the family plot in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. He was buried on 7th May, 1917 in Mount Jerome Cemetery, County Dublin, Ireland – Plot number 290. A8. and has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
