Cobram Courier May 1915
“Things are very quiet over here. We are still training. I go into Cairo occasionally when I get leave, and have a look round. About the only thing you can do in Cairo is to go sight-seeing, and that gets pretty monotonous after a while. Egypt is a rotten place morally and every other way and I wouldn't live in it under any circumstances. I wish the powers that be would hurry up and get us somewhere where we could have a go at somebody. If I had known that we were going to be kept on a string as long as this I think my patriotism would have been similar to those who skulk on a street corner waving a flag as the volunteers go away. I wonder how long the war is going to last? When I was in Australia I was afraid the war would stop before we got there; but now I would like the whole show to shut up if they are not going to let us get into it and do our part.”
Letter from 566 Sergeant Albert Edward Harvey of Cobram, 8th Battalion AIF, Egypt February 1915.
