Son of Frank Zenkner and Ida Paulina Eliza Zenkner nee Sparre of Railway Terrace, Petersburg, SA.

Brother of Frederick William John Zenkner who returned to Australia in September 1915 having served with the 16th Battalion

On 7 December 1918 Leslie married Jennie Parkinson in the Register Office, Wakefield, York, England 

Commenced return to Australia on 31 March 1919 aboard HT Khyber as invalid disembarking on 9 May 1919
