Alfred Lawrence was only 20 years of age when on the 18 September 1918 he led a section of the 16th Battalion in an attack on German lines at Le Verguier in France.  His group captured six machine guns and 28 prisoners. He then rushed another post and captured the whole garrison. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

A Perth military historian quoted that Lawrence served with Lawrence Dominic McCarthy V.C. Alfred Frederick Lawrence DCM, had said to the historian: “That Fats McCarthy was a madman”.

Alfred served as Warrant Officer during WW2, the RSM of Melville Army Camp near Fremantle W.A. He was awarded another 3 medals including the Australia Efficiency Medal.

Alfred’s younger brother died fighting the Germans during WW2, WX13398 Private Clarence Cooper Lawrence, 2/43rd Battalion, of Perth, WA. A farmer in civilian life, he enlisted on 21 May 1941. Shortly after reaching the Alamein front, Clarence Cooper died of wounds received in action on 28 July 1942, aged 21. He is buried at El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
