From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
103 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 22nd June 1919, Trooper Joseph Blackett, 1st Anzac Battalion Imperial Camel Corps (Reg No-1915), carter from 6 off Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 35 Ridge Street, Merewether, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 27. ANGLICAN 1-04. 54.
Died on the 21st June 1919 at the Waratah Emergency Hospital, N.S.W. of pneumonic influenza.
Born at Stockton, New South Wales on the 15th May 1892 to Robert (died 1894) and Emily (died 31.5.1938, age 78 as LASEN or LARSEN or LASIN - married 1900, sleeping here as LASEN) Blackett nee Robinson of 35 Ridge Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Pittown, Wallsend, N.S.W., Joe enlisted January 1915 with the 4th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Joe was invalided home January 1918, being discharged medically unfit (GSW & malaria) on the 25th March 1918.
Mr. Blackett’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I placed poppies at Joe’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge.
I submitted an application to DVA March 2017 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, and this was accepted August 2017.
Plaque placed at the New South Wales Garden of Remembrance - Rookwood Cemetery - Sydney July 2019 (a few details incorrect!).
My error in not insisting for official commemoration at gravesite.
Older brother Charles Edward (34th Battalion, Reg No-368, born 1891, died 14.2.1971, Newcastle, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.
Older brother Ralph Henry (34th Battalion, Reg No-369, born 1882, died 25.9.1954, age 72) also resting at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 3-193. 48.
