Wounded in action at Gallipoli 11 May 1915. Served in France for a long time as Company Sergeant Major. Returned to Australia in December 1918.
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The valuable services rendered by this trustworthy warrant officer have been an example to all the battalion, distinguished, as they have been, by high courage in action. Self sacrificing devotion to duty, and unremitting care for the well being of the men of his company.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 31
