Son of William Robert and Amelia Matilda Upton, of "Carberry," South Avenue, Hurlstone Park, NSW.

19 February 1916 - enlisted at Sydney, NSW, with the 53rd Battalion and with the rank of Private.

24 September 1916 - promoted to Lance Corporal but reverted to Private on 22 November 1916

12 January 1917 - promoted to Lance Corporal
