Gordon enlisted with the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment, "A" Squadron on 22nd August 1914 as a driver.
Army enlistment records show that he had served with the 22nd Australian Light Horse Regiment for 1 year previous to his enlistment.
He embarked from Adelaide aboard the troopship A17 "Port Lincoln" on the 22nd October 1914. He joined the forces at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli on the 9th May 1915, was transferred by Fleet Sweeper to hospital in Nudros with diarrhea on the 21st June 1915. He rejoined his regiment at Gallipoli on the 8th July 1915. On the 19th July 1915 he was awarded 28 days field punishment #2 for "Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline". On the 14th November 1915 he was evacuated from Lemnos to Nudros with Jaundice. He transferred from Nudros to Alexandra on the 26th December 1915 with a rest party and on the 29th December 1915 he rejoined the Western Frontier Force, 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. On the 4th June 1916 he reported sick with dysentery at Romani and was admitted to 31st Australian General hospital at Hill 70. On the 6th June he was transfer to the hospital ship "Niagara" and moved to Port Said. He was transferred to the 3rd Australian General hospital in Cairo on the 23rd June 1916, to the Conv. hospital in Montazah on the 26th June 1916, to Tel-el-Kebir on the 17th July 1916 and rejoined the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment in Romani on the 26th July 1916. He was wounded in action with a thigh wound on the 10th August 1916 at Romani and died in the 3rd Australian General hospital in Abbassia on the 19th August 1916. The battle of Romani was the first British victory over the Ottoman Turks in WW1. He was buried on the 20th August 1916 in Grave # 137, Section "F", Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.
