Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of six brothers who served in WWI (Murdoch served in the British Army, and Kenneth, John, William, Duncan and Raymond served in the AIF), Private Duncan Albert Victor McRae (Service No:1392) enlisted in the AIF on 24 December 1914. Private McRae was attached to 10th Infantry Battalion on 2 February 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Gallipoli on board HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray. On 14 July 1915 Private McRae was WiA at Gallipoli Penisula - GSW hand. According to newspaper reports he 'had his right hand blown off' (Dunmuckle Standard, 1918) and 'While on active service he was gassed, shell-shocked, and wounded, a result of which was that he had the use only of one hand' (The Horsham Times; 1925). On 7 September 1915 Private McRae embarked from Suez for Melbourne on board Hs Ascanius, and was attached to 10th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 11 December 1915.

Duncan was born in Ararat, Victoria in 1885, eleventh of fourteen children of John McRae (b1836 in Cromarty, Scotland) and Flora McLean (b1846 in Argyllshire, Scotland). Both John and Flora immigrated in 1852 - John (an Agricultural Labourer) arrived in Victoria on board the John Davies, and Flora arrived on board the Flora McDonald. John and Flora married in Hamilton in 1865 and lived in Ararat and then Waarracknabeal, where they raised their family and John worked as a Labourer and Boundary Rider. John died in 1897 as a result of injuries received in a fall from his horse. Flora remained in Warracknabeal, where she worked as a Nurse until her death in 1921.

Duncan worked as a Labourer and Shearer before his enlistment in the AIF in 1915. Following his Discharge, he returned to Warracknabeal, where he worked as a Labourer until his death in 1925.
