Biography

AIF Project records his Regimental #2036, occupation Farmer. Residence of his parents: William St, Hornsby. He enlisted with the 6th Light Horse Regiment. 14th Reinforcement. AWM Embarkation Roll #10/11/3. Wandilla information correct. Nominal Roll listed him as Bombardier of 2nd DAC. Returned to Australia 1 July 1919.

After the war, he came to the Central Coast (NSW) and lived at what is know known as  Mardi. He said he named the place after MAADI near Egypt. In Wyong district he had a dairy farm. As butter prices fell durign the depression, he worked for Wyong Shire Council - war wounds would not let him stay long on his legs, but he drove the horse and cart to carry gravel. His arms were extremely strong - could wield a #10 shovel.

Late 1920's he joined the NSW Prison Service. After 95 years they still won't tell us exactly when and where he served as a warden. He did start the Oberon  Prison Farm as it was called, being trusted with 20+ prisoners, two dogs and one cat (his h/w bottle in the snowy nights). Built the place from scratch. Due to war wounds, he was discharged from the service about 1942.

Jack (F-i-L of writer) was an active member of the Gosford RSL, Royal Blind Society, Red Cross, and Legacy.

Jack firstly married Stella CAMPS in 1920 (Methodist, Hornsby) and they had 4 kids - Esma, Peggy, Stanley Jack and Heather. Stella died of cancer in 1933. Jack secondly married May STONE in 1940 - and they had 1 child - David. Jack lived to see 10 of his 11 grand-children. All the family are proud of what he and his parents achieved. His father was Hornsby pioneer Conrad von HAGEN (1855-1933) and Lucy Sarah Hayes EDWARDS (1856-1931).
