Today I humbly pay a sincere and respectful tribute to Corporal Number 3382 Daniel Francis Cronin who fought in the 26th Australian Infantry Battalion,7th Reinforcement who was killed in action on August 25, 1916 in Pozieres at the age of 40 and who rests in peace in the Serre Road Cemetery number 2.Daniel Francis Cronin was the eldest child of Daniel Arthur and Margaret Cronin (nee Clark). Daniel was born in Geelong Victoria. Daniel attended the St Mary’s Boy’s School in Geelong.Daniel was a bachelor when he married Sarah Lydia Buchanan on 10 March 1900 at 234 Johnston St Fitzroy, Victoria.Sarah and Daniel lived in and around Hobart. Daniel was well known in theatrical circles, working in both, the production and acting side of things.Daniel was also the licensee of the Glen Clyde Hotel in Hamilton between 1906 and 1909. In 1914 Daniel and Sarah, also known as Clara or Claire, lived at 3 Burnett St Hobart, Tasmania.Daniel and Sarah had five children, Ivy Florence Margaret Cronin in 1899, Frances Kathleen Cronin in 1901, Francis George Cronin in 1902, Monica Lydia Cronin in 1911 and a son Gordon.Daniel enrolled with the 7/26th Battalion in Claremont , Tasmania. He embarked on the HMAT A31 Ajana on 13 December 1915. Daniel was promoted to a Corporal and he was Killed in Action 25 August 1916, at Pozieres, Somme, France. Daniel is buried in the Serre Rd Cemetery No 2, Plot XXIII, Row E, Grave No 2/4, France. His memory will pass through time in glorious remembrance of all that he has done to offer us a world in peace.Lest we forget🌺🇦🇺🌺
